What is Obesity ?

Obesity is partly determined by a person's genes. If children have inherited the excessive body fat cells of obese parents, they are more likely, to be obese too.

Obesity is defined as being 20 percent or more above ideal weight. . The human body naturally stores fat tissue under the skin and around organs and joints. This provides insulation in cold weather but an excess can have negative effects.

Lifestyles also play a key role weight control. Eating big servings of fast foods ,and spending less time on exercise and physical activities will provide surplus calories.

When more calories are eaten than the body needs, the body stores those calories as fat, causing weight gain. One pound (1 lb) of fat represents about 3,500 excess calories.

Body Mass Index is an accurate indicator of surplus body fat than kilos or pounds. It is a mathematical ratio of height to weight that can be linked with body composition (or body fat percentage) and with indices of health risk.

For instance, a woman measuring 5 ft high (1.52 m), with a medium body frame should weigh between 103 lbs to 115 lbs (46.72 kg - 52.16 kg) to be considered healthy.

Another example: a man standing 5 ft 8 in (1.72 m) tall, with a large body frame is healthy if he is weighing between 144 lbs - 163 lbs (65.32 kg - 73.94 kg).

According to studies, almost 70 percent of heart disease patients in the USA are linked to excess body fat, and obese people are more than twice as likely to develop high blood pressure.

Obese women are at nearly twice the risk for developing breast cancer, and all

obese people have an estimated 42 percent higher chance of developing colon cancer. Almost 80 percent of patients with Type 2, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus are obese.

The risk of medical complications, particularly heart disease, increases when body fat is distributed around the waist, especially in the abdomen. This type of upper body fat distribution is more common in men than in women.

A a man with a waist measurement of 37 inches and more has increased risk of long term health problems.

Body Mass Index is an accurate indicator of surplus body fat than kilos or pounds. It is a mathematical ratio of height to weight that can be linked with body composition (or body fat percentage) and with indices of health risk.

Calculating BMI:

BMI = Weight (in kg) or BMI = Weight (in lbs) x 700

Height (in m)2 Height or (in inches)2

The calculation for someone weighing 80 kg (176 lbs) and 1.60 m (63 in) tall is:

BMI = 80 = 31.2 or BMI = 176 x 700 = 31.1

1602 632

The important thing here is :

BMI can be calculated either in imperial or metric.

weight in kilograms and height must be in meters.

Or weight in pounds and height must be in inches.

People with a BMI of 25.1 to 29.9 are considered overweight, and with a BMI of 30 or above are considered obese.
